40 BC - Pliny, Vitruvius, and Juvenal describe prevalence of goiter in the Alps and use of burnt seaweed for treatment.
340 AD - Ko-Hung, Chinese alchemist, recommends seaweed for treatment of goiter among people living in mountains.
