Pilot posing as cardiologist ran training seminars
DECEMBER 13, 2010 | Lisa Nainggolan
Milwaukee, WI - A former educator and researcher at William Beaumont Hospital in Michigan has been exposed as a bogus cardiologist [1]. While there is no suggestion that William Hamman—who is a trained pilot—took care of any patients, the news that he does not hold the medical and postdoctoral degrees or have the clinical experience he claimed to have has embarrassed many cardiologists and institutions.

Hamman, who is 58, led seminars teaching cardiologists what they could learn from simulation training and from his experience as a pilot. The irony is that he could have done this job without ever claiming to have a medical degree, Dr Douglas Weaver, former American College of Cardiology (ACC) president, told Marilynn Marchione of the Associated Press (AP) yesterday: "He could have been successful without titling himself. He really didn't need to be a physician to do what he was doing. He made a very serious mistake."

It appears that Hamman did attend medical school briefly in the 1980s but did not graduate. But he does hold a pilot's license, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed. However, he is currently grounded from his job at United Airlines because of this deception, which emerged this summer after he submitted a grant proposal at William Beaumont Hospital and staff there tried to check his credentials. He resigned from the hospital in June.

Deception convincing and has continued for 20 years

Hamman's dishonesty about his medical training seems to have been ongoing for the best part of 20 years, with him listed as an MD from United's flight center in Denver as long ago as 1992, Marchione notes in her report.

And he appears to have duped many famous institutions. In 2004, he joined Western Michigan University as codirector of its Center of Excellence for Simulation Research; the following year, the center got a $2.8 million grant to expand simulation training into medical settings. He also gave speeches at Northwestern University for the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American College of Emergency Physicians. He joined Beaumont Hospital in 2009 and this spring led a cardiology simulation at the ACC conference in Atlanta.

One cardiologist who was fooled told Marchione that Hamman was a convincing speaker. Dr Sameer Mehta, a Miami cardiologist who runs an annual conference and had Hamman lead sessions, said the pilot seemed to understand how emergency medical service personnel and staff in the emergency room and cardiac cath lab needed to work together and was able to give ideas from aviation to aid teamwork.

There is no evidence that Hamman treated patients; he had told reporters previously that he "couldn't handle a full-time cardiology practice" along with the demands of being a pilot. But it seems he taped footage for his seminars in the emergency room and other settings where patients were being treated.

AMA was to allow seminar to go ahead, even after learning of con

Hamman apparently asked the AMA to let him continue his work, even after his lies emerged. (выделено мной) And the AMA was going to allow Hamman to lead a seminar already planned even after learning of his deception, by altering his title from "Dr" to "Captain" on course materials, Marchione claims. But the plan was nixed when top officials found out about the ruse.

Doctors who have earned continuing medical education (CME) credits by attending Hamman's seminars need not worry, however. They will not lose any credits earned, the executive director of the Accreditation Council for CME told AP.

Hamman has not spoken publicly about this issue, but his lawyer confirmed to Marchione that he does not have the medical and doctoral degrees he claimed from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
