This hypothesis is less likely, as accessory pathways are generally composed histologically of myocardial cells and behave electrophysiologically like myocardium. Verapamil has not been shown to have any direct effect on the electrophysiologic properties of myocardial tissue.
Finally, verapamil may shorten the refractory period of the accessory pathway as a result of a reflex increase in adrenergic tone brought about by its peripheral vasodilating effect.
